As versatile as flowers are, it can be surprisingly difficult to come up with interesting ways to display them (read: not in a regular vase). Thankfully, with a little imagination, it turns out that there are many stylish alternatives to using a traditional vessel. Floral designer Anna Potter is an expert at stepping outside the basic vase. The founder of the flower shop Swallows & Damsons in Sheffield, England, she creates breathtaking, unique arrangements every day. We asked Potter to share his ideas for composing unique displays at home. Read on to find five unexpected ways to display your flowers.

Forget the dusty flower baskets from previous seasons. Potter says dried seed heads, grass and branches are the key ingredients for an interesting arrangement. “Try mixing fresh flowers with some wilted, dry stems to create a wabi sabi-style bouquet.” Insert them into a metal flower frog to ensure everything is structurally sound.

When it comes to arranging flowers, almost any vessel will work. “Fruit bowls, pottery and chicken wire are great alternatives to shallow vases. Each provides plenty of support and helps shape the overall composition of the arrangement,” says Potter.
